Apple IPhoto 9.4.6 Pre-release Download

... when you import to libary from finder?
anyone noticed this or know how to fix it?

The software is available for download to paid members of the Mac. Preview of Mavericks also includes a new iPhoto 9.4.6 beta (build. Apple iPhoto is the main photo app for the Apple Mac platform. The idea is to store your photos in the iPhoto app and then be able to view or share them more easily. The camera roll displays on the very bottom of the screen and can scroll through it. Click or tap on a thumbnail of a photo to bring it up on the main screen area.

It warns me of duplicate video files. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • iPhoto does not recognise iPhone since upgrade to iOS 5.1. Have tried every suggestion I could find but to no avail. Using iPhoto 9.3 and IOS 5.1. This has only started happening since upgrade to IOS 5.1
Image capture does not recognise iPhone device either, yet iTunes synchronises ok

Any helpful suggestions to resolved this issue welcome!

  • Exported my video from Elements 12 - format mp4 but Powerpoint does NOT recognise the video file. Why?

.wpl appears to be a Windows Media Player playlist. I can find no conversion software for that, and Windows Media Player is not available for Mac anymore.
If you can persuade him to download iTunes and create the playlist as mp3 in a iTunes playlist, or even just burn the base mp3 files to CD as a data disc, that's about the only solutions I can suggest.

  • Since changing my little everyday camera to a new Nikon Coolpix P7100 iPhoto cannot import any of the raw files(.NRW),says it does not recognise them.
I have updated iPhoto to the latest version(9.2.1) but still cannot open them.
    Any ideas please

The raw from the P7100 is not supported at this time.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually. If yours is not supported then let them know you want it:

  • Ever since I've setup my new iPhone, Iphoto will not recognise my camera (Panasonic DMC-FX36); even though it recognises the iPhone camera OK. I've previously used the Panasonic camera without a problem and this has only started happening since synching the iPhone for the first time (not sure if this is coincidence or not).
I can't find anything in iPhoto that suggests any settings have changed.. I've also tested an older camera (Canon iX series) and found the same problem.
Most frustrating as I have a heap of photo's of my newborn daughter and no way to share them.. and a sinking feeling that I may lose them.. any suggestions appreciated.
    Cheers

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I've tried Image Capture without luck..i.e. no device connected. The Camera actually asks for the prompt PC or Pictbridge.. I've always selected PC, now the camera just freezes after I select the PC option.. I have a card reader in my printer, but same problem, device not recognised.. Do you suspect it would be the camera or the iPhoto app?

  • I have a strange problem. Since I upgraded my LR3 catalog to LR4 I have had trouble with the import dialogue box not recognising duplicates and thumbnails but if I cancel the import and try again it all seems to work.
The problem: I have the ‘Don’t import suspected duplicates’ option selected on the import dialogue however when I open the dialog box any duplicates on the memory card are still shown and often the thumbnails only show for the first 20 – 50 photos. When you cancel the import and open the dialogue box again the thumbnail images start popping up and all of the duplicates start disappearing from the dialogue box until they are all gone.
The situation: I am using a retina MacBook Pro running the latest version of OSX, although the problem first started when LR4 was released and I was running it on a c. 2008 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I import a range of files from iPhone photos through to Canon 5D Mk III photos using a CF/SD card reader as well as plugging straight in to the iPhones with a USB cable. My catalog is currently sitting at around 70,000 photos.
When I got the new retina MacBook Pro and first installed LR4 I copied across my catalog files and photos etc and this problem did not exist. It started happening again after I copied across all of the hidden system files (presets, keywords, preferences etc.)
    Any ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Nigel.

    Hi Pitmonkey,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are having issues with your iMac automatically ejecting disks, I would suggest reading over and following the troubleshooting steps in the following article. I know there are references to an external SuperDrive but the troubleshooting is for built in SuperDrives as well.
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing 'About this Mac' from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • I have a video iPod that I got last year and had it synced to my Windows XP on my desktop and I had recently synced it with my Macbook and had no problems with videos, pictures, movies, etc. I got a new iPod nano red and went to put music in it, but I had to download the latest version of iTunes. Just a few days ago I was able to still use both iPods on my MacBook. I just tried to put new videos on my video iPod and I get an error message saying: 'the video was not copied, because this device does not support this file.' I tried to authorize this computer, that didn't work. I tried converting the selected video, but I get an error(-50). I don't know what to do, any ideas? I appreciate anyone's help. THANKS!

Kevin .. I'm with you. I have the same problem. iTunes 9.0 / Windows 7 .. how we actually talk to someone at Apple to get a fix? I got a brand new $800 windows cpu .. that is a brick when it comes to iTunes. If anybody can help us, please let us know.

  • Up to a week ago my iphoto 11 running snow leopard worked fine and now when I connect my 2 canonixuis 85 is the computer does not see them nor does it open the iphoto program. 3 weeks ago I got the new Lumix waterproof (i think FT3) and it connects fine though has it's own lead. I tried a different lead for the canons and still nothing.
A little frustrating as have a heap of photos to download onto the computer. I searched last night and they said to go to disk utility and do a repair disk permissions and still nothing (but I didn't have the camera connected nor turned on.
I keep the computer always updated so can't remember if in the last few weeks there was a update that may be causing this glitch.
Any help from anyone would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help, very much appreciated, but I have identified the problem. Once I deleted the nokia sync software (for photos and videos only), turned off the computer and came back later, turned on the computer and hooked up the 2 cameras everything worked fine.
Just to be a pain to myself I loaded up the nokia software again and bingo the computer no longer sees my cameras - deleted software again and yes the computer and iphoto now see the cameras.
Just for additional info the nokia software allows the the so called sync to happen but iphoto opens but it doe not prompt for photos / videos to be downloaded straight into the iphoto but into a folder on the system via the nokia sync software and then you go into iphoto and imovie to do a import into those programs. What I am guessing is this round about way of getting photos into a location that you are use to is a little painful, and I believe it interrupts with other cameras and since they don't have additional software nor can nokia sync see them the connection sits in limbo land meaning while the nokia software for n9 is there nothing else can be downloaded from other camers.
Solution - delete nokia sync software from the computer and use works computer (PC) to down load the odd photo and video to a usb stick and bring it home.
Hope this helps someone else out there.

  • This is the first time I have tried to log oto Facebook from iPhoto 11.
After 4 hours I am defeated.
I have checked that my Facebook account Platform is open.
iPhoto icon appears under the Facebook Apps page under the Platform setting.
I have changed my Facebook log in and password to ensure that both Facebook and iPhoto are singing the same tune.
I must be doing something wrong that is really basic.
When iPhoto asks for the Facebook settings - It requires:
    email address
    password
I am entering the same data in these two fields that I use to log into Facebook.
It appears that I have managed to set up the correct data in iPhoto by using iPhoto Preferences: Accounts: Facebook
But when I go to a photo and Share and Facebook then I get the message 'Facebook did'nt recognize the login information you entered for the account (my email address).
    Is this problem?
Because my facebook email address is not the name of the Facebook Account. The email address is used to log into the account.
Please help I must be really dim on this one
    Thanks in advance
    Tony

    I have an update.
I control two accounts at Facebook.
One is my personal account and the other is our local village hall.
I have been trying to connect my village hall Facebook account to iPhoto. See posting above.
I have now deleted the village hall facebook settings from iPhoto and replaced with my personal account settings.
    Hey presto!
I have iPhoto connected to Facebook.
So, I deleted my personal settings in iPhoto and replaced them with the village hall settings.
Back to where I was before no connection from iPhoto to Village Hall Facebook.
    Any ideas out there?

  • iPhoto has stopped automatically importing photos from my iPhone 4S when it is connected. It now doesn't even recognise it is there - yet iTunes does.

    Hey mpkrp,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone is unable to import photos because it is not being recognized. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

  • Hello, everyone. I'm using iPhoto '11 on an iMac i7. I recently bought the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, which records HD video (AVCHD Lite). When I insert the memory card into my iMac, it recognizes and imports all photos. However, the videos are left on the memory card, and I cannot even view them in iPhoto. When looking directly in the memory card, I can see the videos (they are MTS files), but nothing will play them. Is there other software I must install to be able to view/edit these video files. I'd like to see them in iPhoto, and then edit them in iMovie like I was able to with my standard definition camera. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same camera as you. You can import the files, but you have to convert them manually first, witch takes a couple of secounds.
    1. Download and install the automator script from this blog and put it in your dock http://blog.sharkus.com/2010/04/avchd-lite-iphoto-importing.html
    2. locate the folder /Private/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM on your memory card
    3. Drag your desired videofile (e.g. 000001.mts) on the automator script you put in your dock in step 1.
    4. whait (a couple of secounds, depending file size)
    5. Drag your new videofile (e.g. 000001.mts.m4v) to iphoto
    6. Finished
Do not try to convert more than two files a once, then the script doesn't work properly.
I hope apple will include support for mts-files very very soon!!

  • Help!!
I have created a pdf file in Adobe Writer Version 6.0 Standard with bookmarks and a comprehensive contents page with links.
If then viewed in any version of Adobe Reader other than 9.0 works fine. Can anyone tell me if this is a known issue and if there is a work around.
The majority of the thousand or so folk that need to use my created pdf are only able to use Reader Version 9. Those with 6, 7, 8, etc are absolutely fine.
    Any help gratefully received.

  • I have only just started to use Firefox as I got very tired of IE. I watch a lot of flash/flv videos on many different sites and sometimes like to download some of these (which I could do on IE but couldn't here). I downloaded the add on 'download helper' which was great and worked really well and easily but all of a sudden it now no longer works (the icon is still there but it won't recognise any type of video form any site at all - and I have no idea at all how to repair/fix it.

I just bought a new Macbook Pro a few weeks ago, but I do not have iPhoto on it after doing a Lion Recovery a few days after purchase. While syncing with my iMac, I put files on it that I didn't want from Time Capsule, therefore the reason for the first Lion Recover. How can back iPhoto without losing files in doing another Lion Recovery? I believe iLife comes with the new Macbook Pro, correct?

Go to the App store and look under the purchased tab.
It should be available for download again.

  • I´d like to export my iphotos 'macbook pro'. Everything worked fine when I installed impression for iphoto but when I installed impression 2 now I can´t export my photos. I´ve restarted the computer but still it doesn´t work.

Are you running Snow Leopard or Lion? Your info says Snow Leopard. If it's lion then:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
Then you can locate the folders mentioned.

I tried to transfer data (musdic & photos) via Thunderbolt, but i did not run, my system always
tries to transfer data via WLAN, but that would last more than 80 hours.
I tried to get some help from the Apple Support, but unfortunately they couldn't help me.
A promised call-back from the next higher support-level has not been done.
Does anybody know what the problem might be.
    The Thunderbolt-cable is brand new.

Instead of using Migration Assistant, the best way is to use the Target Disk Mode, so you will save headaches (Migration Assistant creates a new user with the transferred data).
To do this, just connect both Macs with the Thunderbolt cable, and then, start the MacBook Pro holding the T key, so a Thunderbolt or FireWire icon should appear on the display. After that, go to the iMac, open Finder, and the hard drive of the MacBook Pro will appear on the Finder sidebar as an external drive, under 'Devices'. Just access to it, go to the folders with your iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and copy them to the iMac

  • How do I import iphone photos to mac book pro? I am new to MacBook Pro laptop. Always been a PC user until now.
    Thanks.

iPhoto only imports from your Camera Roll on the iPhone. Other apps can import from other parts of the phone. iExplorer is one such app, but there are others. Search on MacUpdate
However, are you trying t migrate data from your PC to the new Mac? If so that's not a great way to go. The photos are reduced in quality for your phone, so you'll lose things between your PC and the Mac working that way.

  • I have some photos in iPhoto that I would like to give someone so that they can use them in an article, but the person has a MacBook Air and a CD will not work - she has not external CD drive. • AFTER INSTALLING THE LATEST SOFTWARE.
IPHOTO WILL NOT OPEN ON MY MAC. IT WILL JUST
SHOW THE WHITE CIRLCE SPINNING LIKE IT IS ABOUT
TO OPEN BUT IT NEVER DOES??? ANY IDEAS WHY?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
Please don't type in block capitals. It's actually harder to read, and on the forum it looks like you're shouting at everybody.

  • Hello. I'm traveling with my MacBook Pro w/Mavericks for a few weeks. I have a new Mac (Mavericks) at home. All of my current photos are stored in iPhoto on my Mac at home. Both computers have iPhoto.
What is the best way to edit my photos (taken with an iPhone 5s) now while traveling but in a way that I can still import them into iPhoto on my Mac when I return home? I don't want photos split between the two iPhoto libraries. If I import them into iPhoto now, on my MacBook Pro, and then edit them, is there a way to send them over to my iPhoto on the Mac when I return home?
If I import them into iPhoto (Macbook Pro) and edit them now, then when I get home export them as Current from iPhoto on the Macbook Pro and then import them into iPhoto on the Mac, will there be any data loss?
    Is there another solution?

The solution is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move the shots and all the versions and metadata from one library to another.
This is the only way to move everything between Libraries.
If you export, you lose either your original or your version. Unless you export with care you can lose metadata too. If you are going to export, don't use 'Current' as you can get higher quality with other settings.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.

  • I have a 3 year old MacBook Pro with MAC OSX 10.6.8, iPhoto ’09 version 8.1.2 and have downloaded two software programs: one is Aperture 3.2 and the other is Photoshop Elements 9 (which I got from a friend who didn’t need it).
I am totally happy with the way iPhoto organizes my photos and how I can work with iMovie to create slide shows with music from iTunes, etc.
I have been shooting mostly high resolution jpegs and I continue to learn more and more about photography, post processing etc. I realize that the small adjustments I can make in iPhoto are good, and are adequate most of the time. However, a have started to experiment with shooting RAW images and would like to go the next step, ie. post processing.I am totally technically challenged and need SIMPLE, INTUITIVE programs and am certainly NOT anywhere ready for Photoshop CS whatever!
After having these programs sit on my computer, I decided to try to see if I could figure them out. When I opened Aperture, this is what first comes up.
    “Welcome to Aperture 3.2
Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture.
Upgrading a library from previous versions of Aperture 3 generally takes a few minutes or less, though larger libraries will take longer. After that, Aperture 3.2 will upgrade your library's thumbnails, but you can use the application during that time.
Tip: To open a different library, quit Aperture and hold the Option key down while starting Aperture
    Current Library Location:
    Jadzia (home) -----Pictures------Aperture Library
    QUIT UPGRADE”
I have heard horror stories about moving your entire library to Aperture, ending up with 2 libraries, etc. etc. hence my previous reluctance in attempting Aperture. In addition, many of my photography friends are saying: Go with Lightroom 3...you’ll love it!
So here is my dilemma. I don’t want to mess around with my iPhoto library. All I want to be able to do, is to isolate a few photos, export them to Aperture, Elements, and work on them there, then bring them back into iPhoto.
Can I do this? Should I forget about Aperture and Elements and look at purchasing yet another program like Lightroom?

Export those few photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop. Then import them into the Aperture library. That would keep one copy in your iPhoto library and another in your Aperture library to edit, etc.
You can use Photoshop Elements 9 from within iPhoto as your editor of choice. However, if you edit a raw file in iPhoto with PSE9 the resulting edited version must be saved outside the iPhoto Library and imported back in as a new file. For editing jpegs just do a Save (not a Save As) and it all will be kept within iPhoto.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the 'Edit photo:' menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit.
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always. In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note: to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • Do I need to purchase iPhoto again for my iPad 4 has I already have it my MacBook Pro

Hi Trust you now know why - iPhoto being discontinued as in 'Not supported' from next month I believe.
I did purchase it again for my iPad mini whilst travelling without my MacBook Pro but now io7 and iOS 8 photos do what they do not sure iPhotos on iPad as well necessary..

  • I first copied my 667 titanium (inactive laptop) iphoto library (iphoto 2.0.1) to an external hard drive. Then I copied that folder which I had renamed 'Pictures from 667' to the desktop of my 2009 Macbook Pro running iPhoto 11, running 9.4.3.
I downloaded 'Iphoto Library Upgrader 1.0' and opened it from my Utilities scroll and this opened but it listed the library location as /Users/petronplus/pictures/iphoto library. So..Iclicked 'Choose Library' and made my way to what you see in this screenshot: my Iphoto library from 667
I clicked on it and the Library Upgrader then listed it as what you see. It no longer lists my current iphoto11 library
However, when I click on continue I get this window with the launch button blicking blue
When I click 'Launch iPhoto', the Iphoto Icon on the docks bouces a couple of times and the following window opens:
I then click on 'learn more' and it brings me to this webpage:
So, I click on 'here' and back to the 'Iphoto Library Updater 1.0' download page I go.
This just becomes a dog chasing its tail with the same outcome each time: a deadend.
Lastly, I want to just say quit and it tells my I cannot open my Iphoto 11 library because it has to be Updated. I guess that is because I changed from my current library to the 667 one located in the folder on my desktop.
Hopefully, if I go back to my Home, click on pictures, then click library I will revert to normal.
Yes! thank goodness, I have my current library back.
So what do I do to convert the library from my 667 sitting in a folder on my desktop. This approach did not work.
I can still get on the web on my 667..Do I try to download the 'iPhoto Library Updater 1.0' to my 667 and upgrade from its iPhoto 2.0.1?
Thank you. I have tried to be as detailed & clear as possible given how often this same kind of problem has been genericly posed before in this group.
    Thanks, David

    Hi again Terence
I have renamed and moved the old 667 library (iPhoto 2.0.1) into my pictures Folder in my home.
Then I launched Updater and this screen came up and it already had the Iphoto Library 667 as the target to upgrade.
So I clicked continue and got this question window: Your library can now be upgraded by the current version of iPhoto. Do you want to launch iPhoto?
Unfortunately the iPhoto icon starts bounciongand a window comes up which says: To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared..so go get the Upgrader from Apple
On & on in circles it goes.
If I close iPhoto and click on the iPhoto 11-9.4.3 Iphoto Library, which thank goodness still opens with all its info intact and then open the Updater I get a window which informs me that: iPhoto is already running. Only one copy can be running at a time.
So I am forced to shut down iPhoto and Catch 22 continues.
I am trying. Is there anything you can detect that I am doing just plain wrong. Thanks for your patience.

  • Omnigraffle pro 7.4.3 download. In May 2011, I received my macbook pro. I updated it a while ago. When I tried to open iTunes it wouldn't work, so I deleted it from my computer and downloaded it again. The same thing happened with iPhoto, but I couldn't find a download for it. And now Keynote isn't working..What should I do?

Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects your version of the Mac OS, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A statement such as 'it doesn't work' conveys no information. If it did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: 'I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead.' Include the complete text of any error messages you saw and where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever. Also include the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any relevant information, but it didn't help, include details.
Post in the appropriate discussion area. Usually that means the area for the type of Mac you're using, if the problem is hardware-related, or for the Mac OS version you’re running, if it’s more software-related. Some other Apple technologies -- including iPhoto, iTunes, and Keynote -- have their own discussion areas.

  • I updated the latest version of iOS software on my Macbook Pro and now when I try to open up iPhoto it says that I need to update the latest version. But when I go to update on iTunes, it says the latest version is unavailable to the U.S. I wouldn't mind leaving it be but I can't access any of my photos. What do I do?

iOS is on iPhones and iPads.
Are you using an iPhone or iPad?

  • Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on 'cataloging' my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, 'You are unable to log into the FileVault user 'John' at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred'. I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham..I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now 'thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me 'service battery' for a LONG time and then it switched to 'replace soon' som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
.. my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • Here is the etrecheck info. Please advise.. thank you!
